Prey Lang Forest
One of Southeast Asia's last great lowland forests — protected by the communities who live within it
Prey Lang — 'our forest' in Khmer — is one of the largest lowland evergreen forests remaining in Southeast Asia, stretching across four provinces with Kampong Thom at its heart. It is home to rare wildlife, ancient trees, and the indigenous communities who have depended on the forest for generations and now lead the effort to protect it.
A Forest Worth Protecting
Prey Lang is not a national park — it is a community-protected forest. The Prey Lang Community Network, formed by indigenous villagers from across the four provinces, patrols the forest, documents illegal logging, and runs community-based tourism as a sustainable income alternative. Visiting supports this work directly.
The forest holds significant biodiversity: pileated gibbons, fishing cats, sun bears, Asian elephants, and hundreds of bird species have been recorded here. The canopy includes ancient resin trees (chhoeur) that local communities have tapped sustainably for generations — the resin provides income, and the living trees are more valuable standing than logged.
Community-based eco-tourism in Prey Lang is still developing, which means visiting now means genuinely small groups, real community hosts, and experiences untouched by commercial tourism infrastructure. Guides are local forest monitors who know every trail.
