Kampong Thom is easy, friendly, and uncrowded — but a little local knowledge goes a long way. Here is everything a first-time visitor should know before arriving, from the best season to the right amount of cash to carry.
When to come
November to February is the sweet spot — cool, dry, and clear, perfect for temples and outdoor exploration. March to May is very hot. The wet season (June to October) is green and dramatic but some rural roads flood, so check conditions before heading out of town.
Money
The US dollar is used everywhere; bring clean, unmarked notes. Khmer Riel (about 4,100 to the dollar) is used for small change. There are ATMs in Kampong Thom town — withdraw before heading to rural sites, as there are none near Sambor Prei Kuk or Phnom Santuk. Carry small bills for markets and tuk-tuks.
Getting around
Buses and minivans run along the Phnom Penh–Siem Reap highway and stop in Kampong Thom town. For sites outside town, hire a tuk-tuk or a car with a local driver for the day — roads can be rough and a local makes navigation easy. Always wear a helmet on motorbikes, and avoid rural roads alone after dark.
Small things that help
- Dress modestly at temples — cover shoulders and knees.
- Drink bottled or purified water only; tap water is not safe to drink.
- Wear SPF 50+, a hat, and carry at least two litres of water on hot days.
- Learn two words: ‘suosdei’ (hello) and ‘orkun’ (thank you). They open doors.
- Start early — the best light and coolest air are before 9AM.
