Kampong Thom Town
A relaxed riverside capital — your base for exploring the province
Kampong Thom town sits on the banks of the Stung Sen river at the geographic centre of Cambodia. It is unhurried, friendly, and entirely authentic — a Cambodian provincial capital that has not been shaped by mass tourism. Use it as your base: sleep here, eat here, explore the surrounding temples and countryside from here.
Cambodia's Unhurried Centre
Kampong Thom occupies a strategic position on National Road 6, exactly halfway between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Most travellers pass through in a matter of minutes — and most of them miss everything. The town rewards those who stop: a shaded riverside promenade, a morning market that runs from 5 AM, old French colonial shophouses along the main street, and a pace of life that feels genuinely calm.
The town name translates roughly as 'large port' or 'great estuary' — a reference to its historical role as a trading and boat hub on the Stung Sen. That commercial energy still shows in the town's markets, where produce from surrounding villages, river fish, and goods from Phnom Penh mix in a daily rhythm that has changed little in decades.
In recent years, a small but growing scene of guest houses, riverside cafés, and local restaurants has made Kampong Thom a genuinely comfortable overnight stop — and the logical base for the province's major attractions.

What to Do in Town
Morning Market
The central market (Psar Kampong Thom) opens before dawn. Fresh river fish, tropical fruits, local vegetables, and the province's famous Kuy Teav noodle soup — best before 8 AM.
Riverside Promenade
The Stung Sen riverside walkway is the social heart of the town at dusk. Food carts, families, local teenagers, and river views make for an easy evening walk.
Colonial Shophouses
The main street retains stretches of French-era shophouse architecture — painted facades, covered walkways, and family businesses that have operated from the same building for generations.
Kampong Thom Museum
A small provincial museum with artefacts from Sambor Prei Kuk, local ethnographic objects, and historical photographs. Modest but worth an hour to frame your temple visits.
