Tonle Sap Lake Area
Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake — Cambodia's beating heart
The Tonle Sap lake system touches the western and southern edges of Kampong Thom province, creating one of the world's most productive freshwater ecosystems. Between June and December, the lake swells to six times its dry-season size — flooding ancient forests, filling rivers, and sustaining the communities that have lived on its waters for generations.
The World's Most Productive Freshwater Lake
The Tonle Sap is not simply a lake — it is a seasonal phenomenon. Connected to the Mekong River by the Tonle Sap River, the lake reverses its flow twice a year. In the wet season (June–October), Mekong floodwaters push back into the lake, expanding it dramatically and flooding the surrounding forests to depths of up to 9 metres.
This annual pulse of water creates extraordinary biodiversity. The flooded forests become a vast nursery for fish, drawing millions of waterbirds and supporting over 1.5 million people who depend on the lake for their livelihoods. From Kampong Thom's southwestern districts, visitors can access floating villages, wetland bird colonies, and community-led boat tours.
The Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve, designated by UNESCO in 1997, covers over 1.2 million hectares. It is one of the most important wetland ecosystems in Asia and a critical flyway for migratory waterbirds travelling between Siberia and Australia.
